Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their
week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.
Your Company's Most Valuable Assets
With a phone call from a current client this week, I was reminded again of how a company's
monitoring of safety in the workplace could affect them in more ways than one.
The call went something like this:
Client: Keith, I was wondering if you could give me a list of all of the OSHA violations our
company has had in the last 3 years. I know we've had a couple.
Me: No problem. What do you need it for? To complete a prebid application?
Client: No, I need it for a credit application.
Me: Do you mean for an insurance or workers comp application?
Client: No, I mean for a credit application.
Me: OK. Did they say what information they need?
Client: They say they want a description of the violations.
By now you may be asking the same question that was going through my mind when I first
heard it.
Why would anyone be interested in a company's history with OSHA for a credit application?
And could an OSHA citation affect a company's ability to get credit?
I'm still not sure why anyone would ask that question and my client doesn't know why
either. But I can't believe it would be on a credit application for no reason at all.
This brings me to a very important point that I think many companies really don't
understand. Providing your employees a workplace free of recognizable hazards can help
protect your company's most valuable assets . . . Employees - Reputation - Profits!
Today more than ever, businesses want to know more about how the companies they do
business with handle safety, how many accidents they have had and whether they have had
any safety violations.
Because we see this trend continuing (and now it looks like it is even beginning to include
credit applications), I believe it's more important than ever that we at U.S. Compliance Systems work to help our clients and those that read our newsletters better understand the
real value of safety in the workplace.
To help make this happen, we will be taking our company in a whole new direction. One
that will provide our clients the service and support they need to ensure they can protect
their most valuable assets . . . Employees - Reputation - Profits.
I hope you'll keep on reading to see how your company can benefit.
