Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.
. . .Safety and Happy Holiday Season
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are fast approaching the traditional holiday season.Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year's Eve all have special meaning to each of us as individuals, as well as each of us as citizens.
It is our hope that everyone who reads this Safety E-QuickTip can enjoy these holidays with their family and friends.
As employers, you are cautioned to be mindful of the potential distractions and stresses these holidays may have on your employees, specifically as they relate to safety.
Safety, among other things such as knowing what to do under what circumstances, takes a full commitment to paying attention to detail. However, it is possible that an individual employee may have other things on his/her mind related to the holiday season. Time and money constraints may be overwhelming and these very real concerns may adversely impact safe behavior.
Even pleasantries such as reflecting on the meanings of the various holidays, parties, family gatherings, interacting with their children, and so on may be a mental distraction for your employees at work.
Without beating this subject to death, be aware that your employees may have things on their mind that are not related to work and may result in skipping this or that safety procedure. Supervisor observation, safety meetings, and regular and frequent job site safety inspections are, as always, in order.
And don't forget the weather.
If you or your employees are working outside, this time of year also brings nastier weather to most of the country. Wind, cold, snow and ice are just around the corner. From a safety standpoint, proper clothing, gloves, and footwear will make work more enjoyable and, more importantly, safer. Ensure your employees are protected from the elements. If possible, portable heaters for warmth and sheeting for protection from winds can be used.
Insist that your employees wear appropriate clothing for the existing weather conditions.
From everyone at U.S. Compliance Systems, we want to wish you and your employees a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.
