Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.
I Do Think That If You Do Something...
This week is the last week in our series on how to take your safety program to the next level. We’ve covered a lot of information over the past 7 weeks and today is when it all comes together.
In fact these past Safety E-QuickTips have been some of the longest I’ve written and at times you might have questioned whether these were actually QuickTips. But I assure you that I did my best to keep them as brief as possible.
So this week I’m going to make it up to you. I’m going to keep it brief and I hope you will pay attention to each and every word because this could be the difference between you taking your safety program to the next level or not.
Last week discussed part 4 “Pick the top 2 or 3 steps and start putting them in place immediately.” I hope you took me seriously and actually got started. For those of you who did not, let’s get started today, and I mean today.
Start with a 5-10 minute safety meeting. It won’t take long, just 5-10 minutes and you are on your way.
Now that you are started let’s take a minute to talk about part 5 “work on each step until it becomes a part of everyone’s (and I mean everyone’s) workday and then proceed onto the next step.”
Some say if you do the same thing every day for 30 days it will become a habit. Well I’m not sure if that is necessarily true, but I do think that if you do something you believe in on a consistent basis over a period of time you have the best chance of continuing to do so for years to come.
With that being said I believe it makes since to implement a safety program 1 step at a time on a consistent basis until everyone in your organization considers it just another part of their workday and then proceed to the next step.
Some steps you will find easier to implement than others, but again the key is taking the time necessary for each one to become a part of everyone’s workday.
I told you it was going to be brief and to the point. But I’m also asking you again to read each word in the last 6 paragraphs very carefully and then follow the 5 parts to help take your safety program to the next level.
