Anyway, What is Workplace Safety and Compliance About?

Last week I received an email from a client asking if we could help them with a silica exposure plan.

So, I responded with a plan we have put together that looks like a Job Hazard Analysis, but touches on all the requirements of a silica exposure plan.

The response was that he did not believe this short plan would meet the regulation’s requirements.

My response was that OSHA doesn’t say the plan has to be a certain length to be in compliant, only that it must meet their requirements.

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard from someone that they feel using a simple format to meet OSHA requirements would not be considered in compliance. In fact, over the years I’ve heard it so many times that it’s almost like listening to a broken record.

For those of you too young to remember what a broken record sounded like, it was the same thing over and over and over again.

I know what you’re thinking now . . . “it’s all of you safety consultants and OSHA who have made safety so complicated” and I’m going to be the last one to try and argue that point.

Maybe all of us safety consultants have made everyone believe workplace safety and compliance has to be complicated to be compliant.

And maybe it’s time for a change!

Anyway, what is workplace safety and compliance about?

First and foremost, it’s about protecting Americas’ workforce from hazards in the workplace, right?

Next, it’s about being compliant with OSHA regulations.

Now, if you’re trying to protect your employees first, wouldn’t it make sense to keep things as simple as you can, so everyone understands what needs to be done and they can quickly and easily make workplace safety a reality?

Sure, we can over complicate the process and maybe even add in a few big words so we can make ourselves feel a little more important, but what will that accomplish?

Absolutely nothing because if company management and their employees find a safety requirement too complicated to implement - the chances of it being used is slim to none.

Be a part of a better way this week.Do something to make workplace safety and compliance quicker and easier for everyone this week. It’s a great way to protect your company’s most valuable assets, employees, company reputation and profits.
