Men Can Be Replaced, But Mules Cost Money

Last week I was scrolling through the channels on TV when I came across a documentary on coal mines. This was no modern-day documentary. This was one that was put together back in the 70’s or 80’s and it was about a revolution to bring safer work conditions to the mines.

I came in at a point where they were interviewing a 90-year-old man who was telling a story about how the mining industry looked out more for the safety of the mules working in the mines than they did the workers.

That caught my interest, so I stayed on the channel to learn a little more. As the interview continued the gentleman went on to clarify his statement.

He went on to say that management made it very clear that the mules were to be kept out of the more hazardous areas of the mines, specifically areas the workers were required to go.

How did he know this?

Because he was lucky enough to become one of those few men that would be a mule handler, making his job just a little safer . . . at least most of the time.

So, when he had an opportunity one day to ask management why it seemed a mule’s safety was more important than the men’s, management replied that “men can be replaced, but mules cost money.”

Sounds hard to believe that a mule’s life was ever more important than a man’s, doesn’t it?But apparently that’s the way it was in the coal mines around the turn of the century.

I’m glad to say, we’ve come a long way with safety over the past 100 plus years, but there is no question we still have a way to go.Why is that?

Because today we still hear about workplace accidents that could have been easily avoided if company management and/or workers would have just used a little common sense and paid closer attention to safety.

So, today let’s move safety forward and take a moment to remind those that work for you or with you that their safety is important. They should always keep their safety first and foremost in their minds.
