Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.
Give Thanks For Where We Are Today...
I hope you and your families had a great Thanksgiving.
While most Americans were enjoying time with family and friends, more than 70 Chinese workers were killed in a scaffold collapse at a power plant in eastern China.
China has suffered a number of serious workplace accidents in recent years which have been blamed on weak regulation, widespread corruption of officials overseeing the projects, and pressure to increase production as their economy slows.
The accident took place the same day that the former head of the state administration of work safety, Yang Dongliang, went on trial in Beijing for allegedly accepting $3.5 million in bribes between 2002 and last year.
Dongliang was removed from his position after an explosion at an illegal chemical warehouse in the north part of Tianjin that killed 173 people, most of them firefighters and police officers.
I don't know about you, but what's going on in China makes me glad to see that here in the US we have safety regulations in place. Thankfully, most American companies and their employees take workplace safety very seriously.
Now I know that sometimes our regulations and those who enforce them may go a little overboard when it comes to citations and penalties, but without some checks and balances in place, we too, could be seeing workplace disasters todays in our country, like China.
At one time in our country's history, we didn't place the same importance on workplace safety as we do today. Because of that, many families lost their loved ones to workplace accidents.
So as you go back to work after this long Thanksgiving weekend, please take a moment and give thanks for where we are today when it comes to workplace safety and then do your part to make it a safer workplace for tomorrow.
