But It's The Best We Can Do
A couple weeks ago I was heading to an appointment. When I was stopped at a light, I looked to my right and saw 2 men working on a pitched metal roof about 35’ off the ground without any fall protection.
Although neither of the men were wearing a harness, about 10’ away from them laying on the roof were 2 tie-off ropes just waiting for someone to connect to them.
Then I noticed 2 men working in an aerial lift. They were about 15’ in the air and neither of the men were tied off, but hanging in the basket of the lift were a couple of harnesses just waiting for someone to put on.
This made me think about how often over the years I have seen employees putting themselves in unsafe situations when the right equipment to do the job safely is literally at their fingertips.
I’m sure you’ve seen it.The ladder leaning up against the wall and someone standing on a chair or bucket. Employees working in an unprotected trench 6’ deep with a trench box sitting off to the side.Someone grinding on a piece of steel with their safety glasses hanging on their shirt pocket. An employee in a company vehicle without their seatbelt on.
Why is it that even when it’s right at our fingertips, sometimes we just don’t do what we need to do to protect ourselves from workplace hazards?
I wish I had the answer, but I don’t.
All I know is we need to do the best we can to continue to let employees know about the value of workplace safety. We also need to continue to provide the necessary equipment to get the job done in a safe manner.
When you find employees working in an unsafe manner, you need to let them know that you expect them to use the equipment that will allow them to complete their work in a safe manner.Don’t forget to train them on the use of the safety equipment either.Never assume your employees know how to use it.
Even by making these extra efforts I understand, as I know you do, that not everyone will be on board. It will be a constant work in progress, but it’s the best we can do.
As we head into the holiday season, let’s do our best to keep everyone safe and going home in the same physical condition they came to work.
