Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.

So Why is it That Some Are Willing to Take Chances...

Have you ever gone on the internet or had someone send you pictures of unbelievably unsafe workplace pictures?

You know the ones I’m talking about.

Where the guys are holding an extension ladder up in the air so the person working on it can reach a little higher. Or the forklift lifting another forklift so it can place something up on a higher level. Or a guy using a grinder with a plastic bag over his head so he doesn’t get anything in his eyes. Or how about the one where the metal step ladder is in the middle of a swimming pool and someone is on it changing a light overhead.

If you haven’t had a chance to see any of these yet, go online and type in “funny workplace safety pictures” and you’ll find all sorts of examples.

The great thing about these pictures is they are good for a laugh and no one gets hurt. Well, at least not as far as we know.

The sad thing about these pictures is there is no question that someone had to jeopardize their safety and even their life for them to exist.

Now I know that as some of you are reading this you’re thinking that over the years you could have been in one of these pictures because of some of the crazy unsafe things you’ve done while working. In fact, just thinking about it is bringing a little smile to your face, right?

And if you’re discussing this Safety E-QuickTip with a group today, I’m sure there are a few in the crowd that could describe some of the crazy unsafe things they’ve seen people do to get a job done.

So why is it that some are willing to take chances with their lives and their livelihood when it comes to getting the job done?

Is it so someone can take a picture of it and put it on the internet so everyone can have a good laugh? Is it because we think we are invincible? Or are we just not thinking?

Whatever the reason, I hope from this day forward you’ll think twice before putting yourself in a similar situation just to get the job done. The pictures are really funny, but the reality of it is that there are many untaken pictures that ended with devastating consequences.
