Whatever The Case May Be, Before You Choose...

Today we are seeing employers putting more effort into workplace safety - and that’s a good thing.

Maybe it’s because of OSHA increasing penalties and holding employers more accountable. Maybe it’s because companies are more concerned about liability issues.Or just maybe it’s because of the heightened awareness of the value of workplace safety.Whatever the reason, it’s a good thing!

So today I’d like to talk about something a little different - off the job safety.

Although it’s not work-related I would have to say the off the job safety is just as important as workplace safety.Wouldn’t you?

If getting injured when you’re not working is serious enough, you may not be going back to work tomorrow or ever – and that’s not a good thing.

Now I know that none of you reading this today has ever done the following: used an extension ladder at home that has been repaired when you know it should be thrown away, removed a safety switch on something like a lawn mower because it was more of a hassle than you thought it was worth, used an electric hand tool with a damaged cord, or maybe even used something like a 5-gallon bucket or that kitchen chair to reach something in the cabinet.

But you may know of someone else who has.

Let’s be honest, at some point I’m guessing we’ve all put safety aside when we’re not on the job.

Maybe it’s because we don’t have the right tool for the job, we’re in a hurry, it’s inconvenient or maybe we we’ve done it like this before and nothing ever happened.

Whatever the case may be, before you choose to do something in an unsafe manner, stop and think about how it might affect your future. Then do what you need to do to be safe. It might just help ensure you make it back to work tomorrow, something you and others may be depending on.
