Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.

Employees Need Continued Awareness Everyday of Hazards in the Workplace

When it comes to workplace safety, providing employees continued awareness about how they can protect themselves from hazards in the workplace is one of the key ingredients to a safe workplace.

And sometimes as part of that process you may need to repeat the same information over and over again to get your point across.

Let’s look at an example I think everyone can relate to and I may have even used it a few times before. Say you have safety meeting on ladder safety and 3 days later you find someone using a ladder in an unsafe way, like standing on the rung marked “This is Not a Step.”

What would you do?

Maybe you would talk to them about what they are doing wrong and maybe even write them up for a company safety violation – both I believe are a good starting point.

But why not have your next safety meeting on ladder safety? Why would you put on the same safety meeting just 3 days later?Because apparently someone did not get the message and it’s the perfect time to point out the value of using a ladder safely.

During your meeting you might even use the specific incident as an example of what not to do.You can leave the employee’s name out if you want, but I’ve found in the past if you are talking about the same issue again within a few weeks, everyone knows why.

Again, my point is that employees need continued awareness everyday of hazards in the workplace. The more often you make them aware of the hazards, the more likely you will head off a potential accident that is just waiting to happen.

You can also use this same idea if you have a near-miss incident or if there is an accident with injuries.

Keeping with the idea of continued awareness, in the next few weeks I’ll be talking about a subject that I’ve talked about several times before. The reason? I’m continuing to see that employers just don’t have a complete understanding of how this simple process will help protect their most valuable assets, employees, company reputation and profits.

Hope you check it out next week.
