It Will Always Be a Work in Progress
To help ensure your employees are protected from workplace hazards, you need a company safety program that establishes the necessary policies and procedures that both management and employees will support.
Then you need to implement that program.
Over the years I have seen companies spend weeks, months and even years working to develop their company safety program, only to find their program sitting on the shelf collecting dust or in their computer hidden away in a file.Never implemented.
When I’ve asked them why they have never implemented their program, a typical answer is, “I want to make sure everything is perfect before it is implemented.”
And here’s what I have to say about that. There is no such thing as a perfect safety program because, to be effective, it will always be a work in progress.
You see, a company that has put very little time into a safety program but is providing their employees weekly or biweekly safety meetings is, in my mind, way ahead of those companies that are waiting to get it perfect before implementing their program.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying weekly or biweekly safety meetings is in any way a complete company safety program, but at least they provide some safety information to employees on a regular basis. Some information is always better than none.
So, here’s the thing.Protecting employees from hazards in the workplace is all about communicating the value of workplace safety while providing them an awareness of how to protect themselves from those hazards.
And you can’t do that with a perfect safety program that has never been implemented.
If you find your company is struggling to implement your safety program, my recommendation to you is to take one item within your program such as safety meetings, workplace safety orientations, or employee safety handbooks and implement it.
Just one, nothing else.
By doing this, you will immediately be providing your employees with the awareness of hazards in the workplace, while also helping lead to the implementation of other areas of your program.Something that is much more important to your employees’ safety than building that perfect safety program that is never implemented.
