It Could Be The Difference Between an Accident Free Workday or Not

Workplace safety has come a long way over the years. We’ve gone from eating lunch on a steel beam 69 stories up over 80 years ago, to now having regular site specific safety plans, JHA’s, 30 hour OSHA safety trainingand more.

But even with everything that we do, you still see employees taking unnecessary risks on the job. Risks that in many cases end in tragedy.

So why is it that we can’t seem to convince everyone that safety is something you need to keep in mind from the beginning of each workday all the way through to the end?

That’s a question that I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to answer, but until we figure it out, we need to do everything we can to continue to build awareness of the value of workplace safety.

So what is one of the best ways to make that happen?

Well, if you’ve been reading Safety E-QuickTips over the years you may already know what I’m going to say – putting on quick 5-10 minute Safety Meetings.

What makes a 5-10 minute safety meeting so effective is that it allows you to have meetings on a regularly scheduled basis – providing employees with continued awareness of hazards associated with the work you are performing.

You see, when it comes to workplace safety, it seems the more often we are reminded of hazards in the workplace – the more likely we are to work safe.

If you’re looking to try this for the first time, here are a few things you can do to make your meetings more effective.

  • Make sure the meetings are related to the work being performed that day
  • Discuss no more than 2 issues, preferably 1
  • Have them on a regularly scheduled basis (if you’re working in California, you’re required to have them at least once every 10 days)
  • And don’t let the meetings drag out; keep them to just 5-10 minutes

So if you are looking for a quick and easy way to improve workplace safety, why not try the 5-10 minute safety meeting – It could be the difference between an accident free workday or not.
