Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.
... I Was Impressed!
Sent out today to 4,870 individuals looking for a safer workplace for all employees.
Normally each week you read how important I believe it is to get everyone on board regarding your safety program and how you need to make it a part of your company’s culture.
But today you are going to hear about what I saw this past week while on vacation in Florida and how I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw.
My wife and I were visiting our youngest daughter who lives by the intercoastal in Fort Lauderdale and almost every day we would take a walk on the docks. The docks stretch around the back side of her apartment going all the way out to where you can sit and watch all the activity on the intercoastal.
As you walk along, you can see about 5 new 6-8 story apartment buildings going up, and, of course, what I am always interested in, the employees doing the work.
So as we made our last walk for the week I looked up and saw one of the men doing some work on one of the top deck areas of the building. I saw him with one hand on the side wall while rolling something onto the decking that had no guard rail on it. I could see that he had a harness on and I could see a tie off point for a lanyard, but did not see that he was connected.
At first I thought, just another day on a construction site. Employees with everything they need to protect themselves, but not using the equipment.
But then when I looked a little closer, to my surprise the man was tied off. I could just make out his lanyard that blended in with the white wall behind him.
It was then that I looked over at another employee a couple floors down working on another unprotected deck and saw that he was tied off with a retractable lanyard. Then I looked at 2 men working in 2 different aerial lifts and again, to my surprise, they were tied off, too.
It is not often that I see every employee working on a jobsite doing what they need to do to protect themselves from hazards in the workplace. Normally I can find at least one employee doing something wrong, but on this day I was impressed!
Alarms were sounding on the lift equipment as the men raised and lowered the baskets and moved the equipment around. Everyone was wearing their hardhats, fluorescent vests or shirts. And the site - it was one of the cleanest sites I’ve seen.
In the safety industry with everything you see and hear, it can become easy to believe that no one takes employee safety seriously. This week, as I said above, I was pleasantly surprised.
When I’m looking at the next worksite, I’m going to try and look at it in a more positive way, looking for what employees and management are doing right, as well as what they are doing wrong.
I hope you will, too.
