Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week
with a short thought about safety in the workplace.
Habits - we all have them. Some good and some bad.
If you look up habit in the dictionary it might say, a tendency or disposition to act in a particular
way; established custom, usual practice, etc.
I was talking with one of our clients the other day and he was telling me how difficult it was to
get everyone on board with their new safety program. Even though everyone had agreed in the
the begining that changes needed to be made, only a few were trying to implement the new
program and everyone else . . . well, they had one reason or another for not getting started.
Why is it that we struggle with to try something different even when we know it is in our best
It's simple. When we've done something a certain way over a period of time, it becomes a
habit, a source of comfort. And who wants to be uncomfortable?
Implementing or changing how you handle safety in your company is no different. It can be
uncomfortable for everyone in your organization because old habits are hard to break. They say
that it takes at least 30 days of doing something a specific way before it can become a habit.
So if you're trying to implement a new safety program or trying to take a different approach with
an existing program, remember it will take time to get everyone on board. Plan to work at it
consistently over a period of time (a minimum of 30 days) and you will find that safe practices
will become a habit for everyone at your company.
