Putting Yourself First Might Not Be Such a Bad Thing

Last week I was talking to a gentleman who had recently purchased another construction company.

He was asking questions about our safety programs when he went on to explain that the previous owner hadn’t really put much effort into safety. As a result, the company had experienced a lot of accidents, putting their EMR well above the industry average, causing the company’s workers’ compensation premiums to go through the roof.

He mentioned that this might sound a little selfish, but what he was looking to do was to change the company’s culture to make safety a priority on every jobsite in an effort to reduce accidents which would lower their EMR – reducing their worker compensation rate.

So I ask you, is it such a bad thing for an owner to try and change a company’s culture that, in the end, reduces their operating costs? Especially when it provides an added benefit for their employees.

I don’t think so. Because when it comes to workplace safety, putting yourself first might not be such a bad thing.

Think about it.

A company works to instill a culture where workplace safety is important to everyone in an effort to reduce costs. In the end they also prevent accidents, protecting their employees.

That’s a win/win in my book.

What about the employee that looks at workplace safety as a way to ensure they go home at the end of the day in the same shape they came to work?

Everyone wins!

So when it comes to workplace safety today, think about what you can do for yourself so everyone comes out ahead.
