Distractions Are One of Our Worst Enemies

During the holidays we all have a lot going on. That can cause us to become a little more distracted than usual – something that can be very dangerous in the workplace.

I was listening to a radio station the other day and they were talking about how, during the holidays, they find it difficult to keep their minds on their jobs.

Now I know that if you are an announcer at a radio station sitting behind a desk, becoming a little distracted during your workday isn’t going to put anyone’s safety in jeopardy. But that is not the case for a lot of jobs.

If you are someone that is performing some form of physical labor and/or using equipment, distractions are one of your worst enemies.

They cause you to forget things such as making sure you have the right tools to perform work safely, cause you to make poor choices in the way you perform your work, and they even cloud your mind, so you don’t pay attention to your surroundings.

It’s simple.Distractions not only put your safety in jeopardy, they also jeopardize the safety of those working with you.

So, here’s a few workplace safety tips to help ensure you and those you work with have a safe and happy holiday season:

  • When you show up for work, do your best to leave those holiday distractions at home. Don’t worry - I guarantee they will be there when you return home.
  • Pay special attention to make sure you have the right tools available to do your job safely.
  • If you see someone that seems distracted to the point that it’s creating an unsafe workplace for them and their coworkers, let them know about it

And for those of you working behind a desk, don’t forget about things like slips, trips and falls, hazards that we all need to be aware of.

There is no question the holidays can be one big distraction.Don’t let them get in the way of your safety and the safety of your coworkers.
