Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.
So If You Are An Employee or An Employer Do Your Part...
"Making a living shouldn't have to cost you your life. Workplace fatalities, injuries, and illnesses are preventable. Safe jobs happen because employers make the choice to fulfill their responsibilities and protect their workers."
Dr. David Michaels Assistant Secretary of Labor for
Occupational Safety and Health
Work related injuries in 2015 were at the highest annual total since 2008. According to the census, 4,836 workers died from work-related injuries in 2015. This was an increase from the 4,821 fatal injuries reported in 2014. This works out to 3.38 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers in 2015, just a bit lower than the 2014 rate of 3.43.
There is no question that "making a living shouldn't cost you your life," but when Dr. David Michaels says, "Safe jobs happen because employers make the choice to fulfill their responsibilities and protect their workers," I believe he is only half correct.
Why do I say that?
Because I believe safe jobs happen because employers and their employees each make the choice to fulfill their responsibilities to help ensure a safe workplace.
Employers cannot and will never be able to protect America's workforce without each and every employee actively participating in the process. Everyone has to do their part.
Think about it.
Workplace safety is about as effective as parents telling one of their children "don't text and drive" or "don't drink and drive" and then their child chooses to do it anyway.
If employers and employees don't work together for a safe workplace, preventable fatalities, injuries and illnesses will continue to be a part of the workday.
So if you are an employee or an employer, do your part today to help ensure that making a living doesn't cost anyone their life.
