Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.
This is the Time of the Year...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seems like just yesterday we were getting ready for Halloween and now we are just 2 weeks away from Christmas. Is it just me, or it time moving way too fast for you, too?
This is the time of the year when I like to remind everyone of the potential distractions and stressed that holidays may have on your employees, specifically as they relate to safety.
Safety among other things, such as knowing what to do under what circumstances, takes a full commitment to paying attention to detail. However, it is possible that an individual employee may have other things on his/her mind related to the holiday season. Time and money constraints may be overwhelming and these very real concerns may adversely impact safe behavior.
Even pleasantries such as reflecting on the meanings of various holidays, parties, family gatherings, interacting with their children, and so on may be a mental distraction for your employees at work.
Now let's talk a little about driving safety during the holiday season.
If you haven't had the opportunity to talk about driving safety with your employees lately, I believe this is one of the best times of year to do so because it's winter. For many of us, that means sleet, snow and icy conditions - something some of us will have to deal with for at least 5 or 6 months.
And for those of you who don't have to deal with these conditions, as I mentioned above, this is the time of the year when we celebrate the season. That could mean someone might have a few too many alcoholic beverages and decide to drive home in their car rather than calling a cab, putting everyone at risk. We need to drive a little more defensively as a result.
And let's not forget about working outside this time of the year.
If you or your employees are working outside, this time of the year also brings nastier weather to most of the country. Wind, cold, snow and ice are just around the corner. From a safety standpoint, proper clothing, gloves and footwear will make work more enjoyable and, more importantly, safer. Ensure your employees are protected from the elements. If possible, portable heaters for warmth and sheeting for protection from winds can be used.
Insist that your employees wear appropriate clothing for the existing weather conditions.
The holidays are a great time to be with family and friends, so please don't let an unsafe workplace get in the way of that.
From everyone at U.S. Compliance Systems, we want to wish you and your employees a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.
