That's Right - Short And To The Point

For years I have talked about the value of communicating safety to employees.

I do that because I believe that if you talk about something over and over again, at some point it will become a reality.

There are different opinions on how many times you must repeat a message before it will be remembered. Some say 3 times is enough, then there is the "rule of 7" and Microsoft even did a study that concluded between 6 and 20 is best.

Today I'm not going to try and say who is right, but I will agree that the more times employees hear about workplace safety, the more likely they are to remember it on the job and protect themselves from accidents in the workplace.

So, how do employers make this happen in a cost-effective way?

With safety meetings, toolbox talks, tailgate meetings, safety briefings or whatever you want to call them.

Now, to make your safety meetings more effective in communicating the value of safety to your employees while keeping them cost-effective, I recommend keeping them to a maximum of 5-10 minutes and only talk about one safety topic relevant to the work they are performing.

That's right - short and to the point.

Safety meetings will always be one of the best ways to communicate hazards in the workplace and how employees can protect themselves from those hazards.

If you haven't already started one, why not start a regular scheduled safety meeting program this week? It is one of the quickest and most effective ways in communicating the value of safety to your employees.
