Remember This Summer When You...
Spring is here and summer is just around the corner. This is the time of year when we are thinking about everything we will be doing this summer with family and friends. This is also the time when many industries like construction are really busy. For others it’s a time when vacations leave others a little short staffed.
With some a little busier and others short staffed, they may find it more difficult to get everyone together for safety training. So now is the time to make sure you have some short safety meetings lined up so we don’t leave safety behind this summer.
Why safety meetings?
Because safety meetings provide an opportunity to “remind” employees of standard, recurring safety practices; allow for employees to make suggestions and ask questions; provide a vehicle for addressing immediate safety concerns on the current job; and, most importantly, keep safety foremost on the minds of all persons, from the supervisors and competent persons to employees.
Remember - a successful safety meeting does not have to be a long, drawn out affair.
Preferably, one topic is covered, employee input is sought, a dialogue is established, questions are answered, and the meeting is over.
An important factor is the regularity of the meetings. Safety becomes “second nature.” Each task is automatically approached with the understanding that it will be performed safely.
Of course, not every meeting will cover a topic that applies directly to the task at hand that day. However, they are important because, over time, employees may be confronted with various hazard exposures. For example, an employee may not use LP-Gas. However, they may be on a job site or have a contractor working at their workplace and come across LP-Gas stored near a building opening. From the LP-Gas safety meeting, they would identify this as a violation of safety standards and a potentially dangerous situation.
While most employees try to effectively deal with job site hazards through training, PPE and safe work practices, there is no guarantee that everyone at the workplace is as responsible. Conscientious employees may be exposed to hazards created by others.
Safety meetings will help everyone identify those hazards.
Remember this summer when you get a little busier or become a little shorthanded due to vacations, provide your employees some short regularly scheduled safety meetings.
It’s a win/win for everyone.
