Safety E-QuickTips is a weekly email designed to help Employers and Employees start their week with a short thought about safety in the workplace.

What Would You Do if You Knew Today Before You Started Working . . .

Would you say your safety is important to you? Important enough for you to do everything possible to protect yourself from a workplace accident?

I’m guessing without putting much thought into those questions your answer was yes.

So why is it that in 2014 an average of 13 workers died on the job every day in private industry? Think about it, 13 employees went to work every day in 2014 and didn’t make it home to family and friends at the end of their work day.

And on top of that there were nearly 3 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses reported by private industry employers in 2014. That works out to about 3.2 injuries per 100 workers.

That’s a lot of nonfatal injuries in a year and way too many fatal injuries.

So that brings me to this question.

What would you do if you knew today before you started working that you were going to be in serious workplace accident while working from the top of a step ladder (This Not a Step), working in a trench without proper trench protection, by tripping on some material that you failed to keep picked up while working or by not wearing proper safety equipment?

Again like before, I’m guessing you wouldn’t stand on top of a step ladder, you would make sure you had protection in the trench prior to getting in, you would make sure that material was picked up and out of your work area so you wouldn’t trip on it and you would wear proper safety equipment when necessary.

With that in mind, don’t you think today would be a good day to start working like you really don’t want to be one of those 13 employees who died at work during 2014? Or like one of those almost 3 million workers who experienced a nonfatal workplace accident?

Don’t you believe it’s time we all go to work each day with the understanding that we’re going to do everything we can to ensure that everyone goes home at the end of their workday in the same condition they came in?

Do it for yourself, those working with you and for your family and friends.
